    History of the Quad:

The first all terrain vehicles (ATV) were seen in the 1950s. They had six wheels. In the 1970s, Honda created the first ATV with three wheels. It was a purely recreational vehicle but it had the advantage of being able to sneak where other vehicles were struggling.

Honda had a monopoly on first ATVs and engineered the ATC250R in 1981. It was the first "real" sport 248cc ATV with three wheels, a front disc brake and a 5-speed transmission.
In 1983, Suzuki released the first ATV with four wheels: the QuadRunner LT125, the Quad was born.

A year later, Honda replied with the TRX250R FourTrax. Kawasaki and Yamaha followed suit. The Yamaha Banshee 350cc hit the market in 1987.
Another highlight in the development of quads was the release of the first four-wheel drive quad in 1986: the Honda TRX350 FourTrax 4x4. Other manufacturers followed once again.

3-wheels ATVs disappeared from the market in 1987. After many legal battles in the U.S., the Consumer Product Safety Commission decided that the safety offered by these vehicles is not acceptable. The quad started to be known by the mass in 2004.

Today, quads are classified into broad families:
    - Recreational quads: ranging from 150cc to 300cc. They are very popular with families.

    - Sports quads: often found in 2-wheel drive with a mechanical transmission and an engine capacity above 250cc, they perform particularly well in racing and enduro, thanks to the absence of a rear differential that allows controlled drifts.

    - Utility quads: often found in 4-wheel drive with an automatic transmission or a CVT, they easily travel on all sorts of terrain. Quads without a differential are not well suited to drive on road.
